Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve
Mahahual is the gateway to the best preserved (and least known) coral atoll Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve. Chinchorro is a diver’s paradise offering some of the very best diving in Mexico. Shipwrecks caused by the shallow waters surrounding the Atoll have created an underwater garden providing shelter for the abundant wildlife of the region. There is also a colony of fishermen living in houses on stilts over the sea. Depending on the weather and the location of the dive site, the trip to Chinchurro from Mahahual can take between an hour and a half and two hours by sea. The weather does not always cooperate and the conditions have to be right for us to make the trip. Usually a week’s stay in Mahahual will provide the opportunity for us to take this tour. So, in order to enjoy this can’t be missed experience, try to be flexible, pay attention to the weather and be prepared to improvise. Trust us, it is worth it!!!
